Why is my provider billing me?

Believe it or not, the majority of medical bills contain errors. If you receive a bill from a provider that you don't believe is correct you should check to see if you have received an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from Anthem.

Never pay a bill to a provider without having a matching Explanation of Benefits!

If you never received an Explanation of Benefits but received a bill from your provider directly, please contact your provider's office to confirm they have your updated insurance information on file and ask them to submit your claim to Anthem.

If your Explanation of Benefits doesn't match what your provider is billing you, here are the steps you should take to make sure you're not overpaying:

  • Double-check your insurance information on the bill. If you recently changed insurance or haven't seen the provider, they may not have your current information.
  • Make sure you view the most current version of your Explanation of Benefits by viewing it online or calling Anthem.
  • Review the descriptions/service codes on both the Explanation of Benefits and bill to ensure they match the services you received.
  • Check for "Notes" on the Explanation of Benefits. These are generally near the end of the Explanation of Benefits and provide more detailed explanations about the charges.
  • Call the provider's office or medical facility and ask them to review the bill with you to ensure it is correct.
  • Call Anthem to review the differences between your Explanation of Benefits and the bill.

While talking to your provider and Anthem, take detailed notes of who you spoke with, the date/time, and any important information about the call. It may seem like a lot of work, but it could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
